Thesis into Billions
Just thinking recently and want to share, and maybe it’ll spark something for you as well 💡📖
A lightbulb moment hit me, the kind that probably hits you too when you’re knee-deep in research, thesis writing, or conference prep.
But then… what do we do with those moments?
Well, I’m documenting mine here, and you should consider doing the same.
It got me thinking about how many world-changing startups started as academic essays. I did a little digging, and here are some that really caught my attention:
🔹 Google – started as a PhD paper at Stanford → now powers the internet
🔹 FedEx – began as a class project at Yale → now a global delivery giant
🔹 Mendeley – built during a PhD at UCL → acquired by Elsevier
🔹 Satalia – born from EngD research at UCL → acquired by WPP
🔹 OctoAI (OctoML) – spun out of PhD research → acquired by Nvidia in 2024
And yet… I noticed something.
None were African.
Why not yours?
All those months (or years) of work — why stop at submission?
Why not publish it, or even build something from it?
